In the recent Physique War 2016 held at University Cultural Centre at National University of Singapore, no other athlete made the audience (especially the guys) go goo goo eyes more than Regina Tan Zilin, the overall champion for the women’s bikini category. What made it more amazing was the fact that the 21-year-old SIM Psychology student cum freelance personal trainer is a first-timer on stage. In an exclusive interview with SgInstaBabes, Regina shares with us her experience at Physique War 2016 and some tips on how to get dat ass.
SgInstaBabes: How did get started with fitness?
Regina: I got started in fitness initially because I wanted to disprove the stereotype that girls are weaker than guys. So I stepped in the gym and started lifting. Not long after I fell in love with the gym completely. Since then, I’ve been trying to be better, stronger and leaner.
SgInstaBabes: Who’s your idol?
Regina: My idol is Anllela Sagra. The first time I found her on my explore page, I told myself I want to be like her, if not better. She has a super nice and tight ass and that’s my goal.
SgInstaBabes: What motivates you every day to push your limits in the gym and in your diet?
Regina: I would always tell myself that I don’t want to regret what I do with my 24 hours a day. I used to be on the chubby side and realized that I did not want to continue the lifestyle of eating junk every day. During my training I would always tell myself “do you want to regret not doing these few reps tomorrow?” and I would just push through.
For my diet, I feel that discipline and keeping my eyes on the prize is my biggest drive. I do not even eat an extra almond if I’ve planned my diet for the day. I do not want to lose a competition and think about the time I cheated on my diet.
SgInstaBabes: Tell us about your diet and training.
Regina: My diet would be mostly fish for my protein, and for complex carbs I would eat baked sweet potato because that’s my absolute FAVOURITE and if I get to eat it, that’s my treat for the day! I do eat white rice too because I think if you eat white rice at the right time, it would actually benefit your body.
I train everyday with fasted cardio/intervals 4 to 5 times a week. On days I don’t do fasted cardio, I would do an hour of cardio after my workout! Sometimes to be safe I would just add another 15-20 mins intervals just to shed more fat. In my opinion, I think you just have to understand your body so you don’t overdo your cardio and lose muscle as a result.

SgInstaBabes: How did you feel when you were announced as the overall winner of the women’s bikini at Physique War 2016?
Regina: I was shocked, completely. I was so close to tears. I really didn’t expect to win overall especially when it’s my debut. I was told that it’s hard to win on your debut so I was actually mentally prepared not to win.
I’m normally a very tomboyish girl so this competition was actually quite hard for me especially nailing the poses and being all feminine. My friends have seen how hard I practice posing every day just so I don’t look awkward because I usually behave like a guy! HAHA!
SgInstaBabes: Is there any difference between how people treat you before and after Physique War 2016?
Regina: I have gained more followers and people are definitely noticing the hard work I put into this prep. Before Physique War, I kept a low profile about my fitness. I did not post about my body or my progress mostly because I didn’t think I was good enough.

These past 4 months have been tough; mentally physically and emotionally. But this week was tougher. But I am definitely tougher because it's do or die. On a side note, first time in such colorful workout clothes. I feel like a candy floss. #fitspration #sgphysiques #abs #fitfam #workout #gameface #fitasiangirls #fitgirls #doitforthebody #4daysout #girlswholift #fitchick #motivation #fitspo
SgInstaBabes: What’s the weirdest thing about you?
Regina: I would say that the weirdest thing about me is that I love to be on a diet. I absolutely dislike eating out or eating things that I do not know how it’s cooked or what seasonings have been added to it.
SgInstaBabes: Describe your butt in three words.
Regina: My butt in three words would be “needs more work”. HAHAHAHAHA. Ok on a serious note, it would be cute, tight and awesome, I guess? HAHA.
SgInstaBabes: Tell us about your weirdest experience in the gym.
Regina: The weirdest experience in the gym would be someone copying exactly what I was doing! But there was an exercise that he was not able to imitate so he just waited for me to go to my next exercise! Hahaha.
SgInstaBabes: What’s the funniest pick-up line a guy have used on you in the gym?
Regina: The one pick up line that made me laugh was when I was doing a barbell shoulder press and this guy came up to me and said “do you need help? I can lift the weight off your shoulders”.
SgInstaBabes: What do you hope to achieve in competitive bikini fitness in the next few years?
Regina: I hope to be able to compete overseas on a bigger stage, and hopefully get a pro card in the future. I want to be able to inspire girls out there who are afraid or skeptical about joining a bikini competition.
SgInstaBabes: What will your advice be to young girls out there who want to be a bikini champion like you?
Regina: Just believe in yourself, keep your mind clear of every negative comment and people who say that you cannot achieve what you want to. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do because the mind is the strongest and once you have a strong mentality, nothing can bring you down. Just do what you love and do it with all your heart.
SgInstaBabes: Any shoutout to your friends, family and fans?
Regina: I would like to thank my coach Filza for believing in me and for pushing me. She’s just the best. I would like to thank the people who have always told me that I should compete because I was disciplined and dedicated to fitness. They are the reason why I decided to compete in the first place. I would like to thank my parents for supporting me and coming down and cheering for me. This prep has been hard on them, seeing my face sunk in definitely hurt them but they knew that I was happy to be doing this. For my fans, thank you guys for always supporting me and I would try my best to get a better body so that you guys would not have supported me for nothing! Lastly, I would like to thank a close friend, Dex, for always hearing me whine but still reminding me that I’m on the right track and that I can be the best and all I have to do is just put my mind to it. He reminded me that I’ve come too far and been too strict on myself training and diet wise to give up now.
